Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Women's involvement in local government decision-making has gained increasing attention in recent years as part of global efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, women have historically faced significant barriers to political participation, including cultural norms, lack of education, and limited access to political networks (Ibrahim & Umar, 2024). However, recent reforms have aimed to encourage greater female participation in decision-making processes at the local government level. These efforts include affirmative action policies, gender quotas, and support programs designed to empower women politically.

Despite these efforts, women's role in local government decision-making remains limited, and the impact of their involvement has yet to be fully explored. This study aims to investigate the extent of women’s participation in local governance in Lafia LGA, the challenges they face, and the effects of their involvement on decision-making outcomes. By evaluating the progress made in integrating women into political processes, the study will provide a comprehensive understanding of gender dynamics in local government.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although there has been a push for greater female participation in local government, women in Lafia LGA still face significant barriers that prevent their full engagement in decision-making processes. These challenges include limited access to education, gender stereotypes, and inadequate support for women in leadership roles. This study will explore the challenges women face in Lafia LGA and evaluate how their participation in local government decision-making impacts governance outcomes.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of women’s participation in local government decision-making in Lafia LGA.
  2. To identify the barriers that hinder women’s involvement in local government decision-making in Lafia LGA.
  3. To evaluate the impact of women’s participation in decision-making on governance outcomes in Lafia LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the level of women’s participation in local government decision-making in Lafia LGA?
  2. What are the main barriers preventing women from fully participating in decision-making in Lafia LGA?
  3. How does women’s participation in decision-making influence governance outcomes in Lafia LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Women’s participation in local government decision-making in Lafia LGA is limited.
  2. Barriers such as cultural norms, lack of education, and limited access to political networks significantly hinder women’s political participation in Lafia LGA.
  3. Increased women’s participation in decision-making improves governance outcomes in Lafia LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the barriers women face in political participation and the impact of their involvement in local government decision-making in Lafia LGA. The findings will inform policies and programs aimed at enhancing women's participation in governance, contributing to more inclusive and representative decision-making processes. Additionally, the study will help local government officials understand the importance of gender-inclusive policies for achieving sustainable development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, and examine the participation of women in local government decision-making within this region. Limitations include potential biases in data collection, especially if respondents are hesitant to provide honest feedback on gender-related issues due to societal pressures.
